Some designs come together in my studio, but most are brainstormed first in my sketchbook. I have a small notebook that I carry with me at all times. It's what I use when ideas come to me during regular everyday life and during museum visits.
I periodically sit down either in a coffee shop or in my studio with what I call my formal sketchbook. I will select markers in shades that I think will work for my designs and I get to work sketching!
Sometimes an idea from my notebook will transform into a very different pieces, other times it will stay exactly the same. And sometimes I will sketch out a design in several color ways or shapes.
I revisit sketches a lot and will periodically make edits to shapes or colors before I start to play around with physical materials.
